Bio
Ravi Ranjan Singh is an Sikh activist and former journalist, best known for his strong stance against the Halal certification system and his advocacy for Jhatka meat. He is the founder of the Jhatka Certification Authority, launched in 2014 to provide a religiously neutral, cruelty-minimizing alternative to Halal. Singh promotes the Jhatka method, traditionally followed by Sikhs and some Hindus, where animals are slaughtered with a single strike to the neck—aiming to minimize suffering and avoid ritualistic killing.

Singh argues that Halalonomics—a term he coined—has enabled religious monopolies that restrict consumer choice and discriminate against non-Muslims, especially Dalit butchers and small-scale Hindu meat vendors. His organization has issued thousands of Jhatka certifications across India to empower these communities and counter Halal dominance in the meat industry.

Beyond meat, he challenges the spread of Halal certification into cosmetics, medicines, and packaged food, calling it a silent form of economic and cultural imposition. He’s also been a litigant in the Ram Janmabhoomi case and has filed legal petitions demanding labeling of meat as Halal or Jhatka in public institutions.

Though controversial, Ravi Ranjan Singh has sparked a much-needed debate about consumer rights, religious neutrality in commerce, and the hidden implications of faith-based certification systems.
